Guatemala’s sprawling northern province of El Peten is a world of jungles, rivers, lakes, caves, towering Maya temples and beautifully carved stelae. Its crown jewel is the great Mayan city of Tikal, a vast complex of more than 3,000 structures. The ruins of Ceibal, Aguateca, and Yaxha contribute to the Peten's standing as the heartland of the Maya. The area is also home to the largest protected forest in Central America, dubbed the Maya Biosphere Reserve, which comprises five national parks and three wildlife reserves sheltering hundreds of species of trees, birds, reptiles and mammals. |
